Our Story
Tukkos has always been deeply personal to our family. At the root of everything we do is Jayson, whose journey taught us that every child experiences, communicates, grows, and learns in their own unique way. Through him, we learned the importance of creating environments where children are truly understood, supported for who they are, and given meaningful opportunities to grow and become more independent.
As Tukkos grew, families began trusting us with their own children and sharing many of the same hopes and challenges we had experienced ourselves. Over time, parents repeatedly asked us, “Have you ever thought about opening a school?” They wanted something different: a place where the child wouldn't have to fit into one traditional way of learning, but where learning could instead be built around the child.
That is how Tukkos Learning Academy began. Our vision is to create a learning environment that looks at the whole child, including their strengths, interests, academic abilities, communication, sensory needs, social development, and independence. By bringing together individualized academics, child-led learning, ABA-informed support, sensory enrichment, STEM, communication, social skills, and life skills, we hope to give every student the opportunity to learn and grow in the way that works best for them.
Jayson will always be the root of our story, and every family who places their trust in Tukkos helps that story continue to grow. 💜
The Process
At Tukkos Learning Academy, we don't believe in choosing a program first and expecting the child to fit into it. We begin with the child. Our process starts by getting to know each student and understanding their strengths, needs, interests, communication, sensory needs, academic abilities, and individual learning style.
We review available educational and behavioral records, including the student's IEP, evaluations, academic history, and behavioral assessment when applicable. Our team then spends time observing and interacting with the student so that our decisions are based not only on paperwork, but on the child we see in front of us.
Using everything we learn, our Teacher and Administrative Director work together to create an Individualized Learning Plan. We then select the curriculum, educational programs, materials, goals, pacing, and teaching strategies that best support that individual student.
Once the plan is in place, learning begins with individualized support and ongoing educational oversight. We continuously monitor the student's progress, celebrate growth, identify areas that need additional support, and adjust the learning plan as the child grows and their needs change.
Because at Tukkos, the child doesn't fit the plan. The plan is built around the child. 💜
